We had a whole slew of people get together for this weekend’s adventure, in part because of a mixed bag of activities, but also to celebrate the engagement of Jen and Ian.  Jen, Ian, Matt, Chari, Mike, Martha, and LIz met at the Camp 9 area outside of Tioga Pass before bedding down for the night.  We awoke at 6 am. We weren’t quite prepared to get up that early, but a certain forest ranger enforced the rules on us and booted us out of Camp 9 in a fit of fury. Apparantly one can not camp at Camp 9, as I had believed. He wasn’t too gentle about it, but I imagine that he has to deal with a bunch a yahoos on a daily basis, so it’s a little on the justifiable side.

We creeped down to Whoa Nellie for breakfast and to plan out the weekend.  Chari, Liz, and I decided to climb Mt. Warren beginning not far outside the park . . . right across from Camp 9, actually. The traditional route up Mt. Warren follows the Warren Fork to its source and then ascends the ridge before traversing to the summit.  Steve Ekhert over at climber.org provided a different route that left the Warren Fork earlier and seemed to head for the summit rather directly.  We chose this route and were happy with the results.

We took the drainage that passes just to the northwest of Pt. 10240 and continued to follow it through grassy fields and into the talus. At the top of the drainage, we were looking at the final summit of Warren, and it didn’t seem far. We walked up the last talus pile to the top and took in fine views of Mono Lake, Dana, and much of northern Yosemite. We reached the top sooner than we had expected, which was a pleasant surprise.
