Ventana Wilderness 4.3.2004

had been looking forward to this weekend as this was going to be my first backpacking experience.

We started from the Arroyo Secco trailhead and began to hike up canyon, but on the rim.  After three miles or so the trail descends to the stream and crosses it, heading up a tributary. From there on we walked through woods and stream, but the poison oak was a constant companion.  It arched over the trail at every level, giving you the willies just looking at it. We had gotten a late start from Oakland, and the drive was longer than expected.  The original plan was ambitious, a loop that would include Junipero Serra (5800+ ft). Alas, Matt didn’t really get the scale of the map right, so we adjusted our plans and camped overnight at Willow Spring. We went to bed early and slept late, having decided that we would just turn around and hike out. Enjoy the scenery! Back at the stream, we even went for a swim.

Matt thought we could have done better with better topos and planning but I thought this was a great experience for me altogether. This was my first backpacking experience with some really cool friends!
