Northstar and Mt. Rose   4 February 2005                                                   thumbnails below!

Party’s on at Northstar! Thanks to the combined hospitality of Mike H. and Rudolph & Sletton, we were able to enjoy a grand get-together at a cabin at Northstar. The first day was an attempt on nearby Mt. Rose. Mike J. and Dan grabbed their split boards, Bob hopped on his teles, Chari, Meg, Jo, Tanja, Martha, Mike, and I grabbed snowshoes, and Kevin grabbed both (hard core!). For a lot of us, it was our first snow adventure, so we were feeling our way along as we went.  Plenty of powder for everyone!

Mike and Dan split off (ha ha, on split boards even) to do some boarding while the rest of us trudged up the main drainage just west of the summit.  We churned up a lot of time, so we split into a summit group and a 10,000 ft group.  Mike H., Tanja, Bob, and Kevin got the glory shots at the summit (nice work you four!) and then descended. Martha, Chari, and Matt stopped at the ridge just at 10,000 ft while the other waited a little bit below.  We all gathered again in the drainage and began the long haul out. The last part of the return required a small bit of climbing, but it took some effort as Martha and I kept a rapid pace back to the car. The remainder of the group flowed in, followed by Mike, who took a long while to return, but I forget why!

That evening was time for story-telling, video game droning, mass knit-ins, and copious amounts of food.  If there’s one thing this group does well, it’s food.

Northstar the next day was a great time. Jen joined us for as many runs as she could churn out. The Hazels took their first licks at snowboarding while Bob and I tore up some of the longer runs. There are times for groomed skiing/boarding, and this was a great day. Later, I joined back up with the Hazels, knowing how frustrating it can be to get your body to do stupid stunts on a snowboard. Heel to toe and toe to heel can be amazingly challenging all of a sudden.  They grinned their way through it, sore fannies and all.

Thanks to all for coming together for a great winter outing!
