Bishop Mule Days Mem. Day 2005                                                - thumbnails -

Mule Days again! Our crew this year consisted of the Hazels, Martha’s friend Martin, Mike/Tanja, Bob/Jo, and Chari/Matt.  Chari and I came out on Friday and stopped for a short while at the Dreamers near Sherman Summit. We stopped there in case others had the same idea, but we were alone, without a crash pad. Drat.  We played around on some of the easier stuff, but then went on to Bishop and on to our campsite up in the Buttermilks.  Everyone got into site by late that evening.

Saturday we went into the central Owens Gorge. Great Wall of China was packed, so we moved up to the Staying Power Towers formation and climbed the heck out of it: Don’t Make Me Laugh(9), Direct North Face P1(10b), Members Only(10c), and Bender(11b). The sun came around to the east wall of the gorge and we moved on to Fun House, and then to Gorgeous Towers: Zippy the Zenhead (9) and Gorgeous(10a).

Sunday we went exploring the Mammoth climbing area, braving forest roads to find Al’s Garage.  What a mini-wonderland of bolted climbs.  Again, we set to work: Sound of One Hand Slapping and Aviary (8 & 8**), East Side Daze (9***), Sangha (9), Jhana (10a), Triple Delight (10b****), and Wake-n-Bake (11a). I thought it was a great spot, although the loose pebbles that rained down reminded us that it was not an established climbing area yet.

Monday was pack-up day, and we headed north to Dreamers before hopping to Tioga MobilMart, Sonora Pass, and Oakdale.
